  • Most pet parents don’t want to think about all the terrible things that can happen to their pet. Unfortunately, it is my job to help you prepare for the worst case scenario. Just like the first aid kit in the car, we hope to never have to use it but we have it ‘just in case’. Your pet first aid kit is meant to be the bridge between wherever you are and the closest emergency clinic.

Your pet first aid kit should include the following:

    1. Pet first aid guide book
    2. List of emergency contact information
    • Current Veterinary information
    • Emergency contacts (at least 3)
    • Up to date list of vaccinations, current photo of pet and any medical issues – Keep this in a waterproof bag
    1. Poison Control Hotline – 855-764-7661
    2. Nylon slip lead leash
    3. Self-clinging bandage – this will wrap all the way around any open around and stick to itself
    4. Muzzle – if your pet is in pain, they will be far less tolerant when you try to examine or bandage them. Using a muzzle will protect both them and you. Do not use a muzzle if your pet is having trouble breathing or vomiting

    First Aid Supplies

    1. Absorbent gauze pads
    2. Adhesive tape
    3. Antiseptic wipes, lotion, powder and spray
    4. Cotton balls
    5. Gauze – pads and rolled
    6. Hydrogen Peroxide
    • This is used to induce vomiting if your dog ingests something they should not have
    • Always consult a veterinarian prior to inducing vomiting. In some cases inducing vomiting may cause further injury.
    1. Ice packs
    2. Latex free gloves
    3. Medical Scissors
    4. Petroleum jelly – used to lubricate thermometer prior to use
    5. Rectal thermometer – Average temperature for dogs is between 100-103 degrees Fahrenheit
    6. Saline Solution
    7. Tweezers
    8. Thermal foil blanket

    Other Items to Consider:

    1. Benadryl – Used for allergic reactions. Contact your veterinarian for dosage information
    2. Ear solution
    3. Flashlight
    4. Nail clippers
    5. Antibiotic ointment – non-prescription unless prescribed by a vet
    6. Eyedropper
    7. Styptic powder
    8. Towels

Your kit should also include anything instructed by your veterinarian per your dog’s specific needs. This kit is meant to be a temporary solution until you are able to get to an emergency clinic. You should never try to self-diagnose or treat your dog. Always seek professional help from your veterinarian.
